1️⃣ The first dog walks with a wide stance to prevent his patella from popping — a classic Grade 4 case. Due to the chronic nature of his condition, a concurrent CCL tear is suspected. Surgery may not be an option because of his other medical concerns.

Meet Sumo.

When he first came in, he was too weak to turn over on his own. Degenerative myelopathy had affected all four limbs — even simple things like shifting positions required full assistance.

After a few weeks of therapy (and lots of love from his pawrent), we received this video:
✨ Sumo repositioning independently
✨ Less risk of pressure sores
✨ More comfort and control over his rest

Even in progressive neurological conditions, every bit of functional improvement matters — and Sumo’s ability to reposition himself shows that the body can still learn and adjust.

As dogs age, they naturally experience sarcopenia—a reduction in muscle mass and strength caused by aging alone, not linked to chronic conditions like heart or kidney failure or cancer.

This gradual “thief” often goes unnoticed until muscle loss becomes significant, but the good news is that while you can’t stop sarcopenia, you can take steps to slow it down and support your dog’s muscle health.

🐶 Recognising the Signs: Signs include reduced endurance, difficulty getting up from rest, morning stiffness, a drop in activity level, and noticeable muscle loss. Diagnosis involves clinical assessments like body and muscle scoring—or imaging such as DEXA, MRI, or CT scans.

Dogs usually come for rehab after spinal cord injury, but do you know physiotherapy CAN help with brain conditions like stroke and brain trauma as well? 👀

Here we have Ponzu who suffered a left sided brain trauma which left her with no awareness of her right body. At the start of her injury it was so pronounced she only left half of her food bowl untouched because of the neglect! It was difficult to rehab her right knee after knee cap surgery if she did not have any awareness of it at all.

During her rehab we tried a treatment method derived from the human physiotherapy world - using eye-patching to improve her awareness (research 🔗 below). It worked WONDERS for Ponzu. Now she can make right-sided turns and we in such a better place to start rehab for her knees! 💪🏻

In human physio world, stroke and brain injuries get intensive rehab especially in the first 3 months up to a year because that’s when most recovery occur. Our pets deserve the same treatment because there IS potential for recovery! So please don’t hesitate if your pet recently suffered from similar neurological conditions!! ⚠️
