Arthritis or Degenerative Conditions

Arthritis and joint/cartilage degeneration are more common in older pets, but younger pets with pre-existing conditions can also experience these issues due to added stress on their joints. While degeneration is a normal part of aging, excessive stress can lead to inflammation and osteoarthritis. Some stressors include vigorous activities like jumping from height and obesity. Keep your pet active as they age to slow degeneration and prevent osteoarthritis! If your pet has a pre-existing musculoskeletal condition, do consult a physiotherapist for management strategies.

Signs & Symptoms

Depending on the joint affected, your pet may present with:

  • Limping or lameness

  • Reduced joint mobility of affected joint

  • Some muscle wasting on affected limb (more prevalent for chronic conditions)

  • Swelling on affected joint during acute flare ups
