Shasha’s owner came to us with hopes that physio can help Shasha regain some form of independence after her spine trauma. We had no idea how far Shasha will improve due to her initial presentation. Fortunately her owner came to us early - just shy of 1 month post-injury (PSA: neuro rehab shows best outcome within first 3 months of injury). We tried as much as we can to help Shasha regain her muscle function and strength, and we are so happy that Shasha has regained her walking ability! 👏🏻✨🥹

Set poles at ankle height to encourage knee flexion and build hamstring and calf strength. No poles at home? 🌱 No problem! Try short walks on grass as tall as your dog’s ankles for a free, natural alternative.

Sarcopenia: The Silent Muscle Thief in Our Dogs 🐾

As dogs age, they naturally experience sarcopenia—a reduction in muscle mass and strength caused by aging alone, not linked to chronic conditions like heart or kidney failure or cancer.

This gradual “thief” often goes unnoticed until muscle loss becomes significant, but the good news is that while you can’t stop sarcopenia, you can take steps to slow it down and support your dog’s muscle health.

🐶 Recognising the Signs: Signs include reduced endurance, difficulty getting up from rest, morning stiffness, a drop in activity level, and noticeable muscle loss. Diagnosis involves clinical assessments like body and muscle scoring—or imaging such as DEXA, MRI, or CT scans.

🦴 The Muscle-Joint Connection: Reduced muscle mass may lead to increased body fat and extra stress on your dog’s joints. With less muscle strength to support body weight, arthritis progresses faster—and the cycle of muscle loss and joint strain becomes self-perpetuating.

🏋️‍♂️ Prevention and Rehabilitation:

For Young Dogs: Start young! Keep your pup active with strength-based exercises, maintain a healthy weight, and create a safe home environment to reduce joint strain and injury risk.

For Senior Dogs: While sarcopenia can’t be reversed, you CAN boost their strength with pain management, gentle strength exercises like sit-stands, non-slip surfaces for easier movement, and a high-protein diet to support muscle health.

With the right care, your dog can age gracefully, staying strong and active! 💙

✨Rehab Post✨

Dogs usually come for rehab after spinal cord injury, but do you know physiotherapy CAN help with brain conditions like stroke and brain trauma as well? 👀

Here we have Ponzu who suffered a left sided brain trauma which left her with no awareness of her right body. At the start of her injury it was so pronounced she only left half of her food bowl untouched because of the neglect! It was difficult to rehab her right knee after knee cap surgery if she did not have any awareness of it at all.

During her rehab we tried a treatment method derived from the human physiotherapy world - using eye-patching to improve her awareness (research 🔗 below). It worked WONDERS for Ponzu. Now she can make right-sided turns and we in such a better place to start rehab for her knees! 💪🏻

In human physio world, stroke and brain injuries get intensive rehab especially in the first 3 months up to a year because that’s when most recovery occur. Our pets deserve the same treatment because there IS potential for recovery! So please don’t hesitate if your pet recently suffered from similar neurological conditions!! ⚠️
